One of the most anticipated events of the MLB offseason is set to begin on Monday. The Winter Meetings draw an immense amount of attention and rightfully so as several big time trades and signings occur during the week.
The Baltimore Orioles have been one of the most rumored teams in all of baseball thus far this offseason, whether it be their willingness to trade certain players, free agents they are targeting or extensions with current players, thus expectations are pretty high for Orioles fans heading into the meetings.
Executive VP/GM Dan Duquette stated after the Jim Johnson trade that the money saved would be reallocated elsewhere to fill the team’s needs and one of those moves came yesterday courtesy of a two year, $4.5 million deal with RHP Ryan Webb, but fans want more.
The Winter Meetings present GM’s around baseball with the perfect opportunity to sit down with other GM’s as well as free agent players and their agents to try and workout deals. Baltimore still has several holes to fill on their roster including left field, second base, closer, starting pitcher and a left handed DH, thus the Orioles should be active at the meetings.
Fans are waiting for the “wow factor” from the Orioles front office and with the recent rumors of the Birds being interested or “in” on some high profile free agents have their fans with high expectations. There has even been reports that some of the players in the organization are unhappy with recent events with the moves the Orioles have made, thus a big move seems even more important than ever before.
What do we expect from Baltimore this coming week at the meetings?
Well we do anticipate that the Orioles will make some moves, but we are pessimistic that any of them will be for a big time player.
In addition, we anticipate that the Orioles will make it three years in a row with selecting someone in the Rule 5 Draft that they will have to keep on the active roster and most likely a position player.
Lastly, and in our minds the most important prediction we are making, the Orioles will emerge as a better team after the Winter Meetings that they are heading into it. The improvement will likely not come from a marquee player, but the addition of a couple complimentary players that help fill some holes on the roster.
How do you feel about the team right now? How do you think you will feel about the team after the Winter Meetings? Do you expect the Orioles to be active at the Winter Meetings? Let the conversation ensue by posting a comment!
