MLB's Ken Rosenthal broke the story and the Baltimore Orioles later confirmed that they traded closer Jim Johnson to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for 2B Jemile Weeks and a player to be named later.

Johnson was set to make an estimated $10 million or more in arbitration and it became clear the Orioles simply did not want to pay their closer that much money and worked all day to find a suitor.

Despite rumors most of the day that the Los Angeles Dodgers were the front runners to land Johnson, the A's wound up being the match Executive VP/GM Dan Duquette was looking for.

Baltimore will receive Weeks and a player to be named later in the deal.

Our Twitter feed blew up after the trade was announced because several people felt the Orioles got short-changed.

Although one would think that a closer who has saved 101 games over the last two years and had a sub three ERA in both those seasons would bring back more, no team wants to pay their closer $10 million for one year, so when you find a team that is willing to, you almost have to take it.

We feel that many people are disrespecting Jemile Weeks a little bit. He is a .258 career hitter in two real seasons in the big leagues with 41 doubles, 38 stolen bases and a .319 on base percentage. In his rookie year in 2011, Weeks burst onto the scene hitting .303 with 26 doubles, two homers, eight triples, 36 RBI, 22 stolen bases and a .340 OBP. This is a guy who can play second, shortstop and centerfield, with the ability to steal some bases and gap to gap power who also happens to be a switch hitter.

Most of all, the Orioles free up $10 million to try and bolster their starting rotation or for a big bat, while gaining a guy who is under team control to the 2019 season.

One thing is for sure, we will miss hearing the Foo Fighters in the ninth inning at the Yard!

so we are hoping that weeks is pre-concussion brian roberts without the pop?

Honestly, Weeks was simply an incidental piece, Baltimore wanted to dump Johnson’s salary, and Weeks was just a way of saying they got something back.
