It’s time for another segment of Orioles101’s Minor League Monday and today we sit down with standout minor league catcher, Michael Ohlman.
Before we get to the interview, let’s get some background information on Ohlman. He is currently taking part in the Arizona Fall League with seven other Orioles organizational players and is performing very well hitting .350 with two homers, five RBI and a robust .552 OBP for the Surprise Saguaros.
In addition, the Orioles drafted him in 11th round of the 2009 MLB Draft out of Lakewood Ranch (FL) High School and he is coming off of a fantastic 2013 season with the Frederick Keys that saw him hit .313 with 13 homers, 29 doubles, 53 RBI and post a .410 OBP in 100 games.
Now let’s get to the interview.
Orioles101: If you can, describe the feeling you had with the Orioles selected you in the 2009 draft.
“It was a great feeling to realize all the hard work that was put in behind the scenes for so many years paid off. And the possibility of spring training being right down the road from home was a bonus.”
Orioles101: Were the Orioles on your radar in 2009? Or did it come as a surprise when you got the call?
“I had some contact with the Orioles before the draft, but it was a little bit of a surprise when I got the call. Either way, I was ecstatic.”
Orioles101: Was there any doubt in your mind when you were drafted that you would sign? Or did you consider going to college?
“That is easily the hardest decision I ever had to make, especially at the age of 18. I had boxes packed up in the car to move into my dorm the day after I agreed to terms. Along with playing professional baseball, a college degree is something I have always wanted.”
Orioles101: You have posted back-to-back good seasons numbers wise, what sort of adjustments have you made at the plate?
“My growth and maturity mentally and physically are the biggest reasons for my success. Having a plan at the plate and knowing what the pitcher is going to do to try to get me out.”
Orioles101: Does any part of you worry about the Rule 5 draft and your 40-man roster status as your name is rumored to be added to be protected?
“I just control what I can on the field and do my job. I’ll leave the rest up to the people that make the decisions. I’m very happy in the organization and I’d like to be able to help the team for years to come.”
Orioles101: You are performing very well in the Arizona Fall League this fall, how has the experience been so far and what’s it like to be among the best prospects in the game?
“The experience has been unbelievable here. I’m with a great group of guys. Being among the top tier of talent in the minors makes you realize how close you are, and also pushes your game to the next level.”
Orioles101: Last one for you, who is your favorite football team, and who wins this year’s Super Bowl?
“The Bucanneers, but I think we can eliminate them from the Super Bowl. I think I’m going with Chiefs this year, they have a very solid team.”
We would like to thank Michael for taking the time to sit down with us for an interview, and we probably speak for everyone when we say that we are sorry your favorite team is the Bucs, although they did almost pull off an historic upset yesterday against the Seahawks.
Ohlman is just one of the catching prospects making noise in the Orioles farm system, and he will need to be added to the 40-man roster before the Rule 5 draft, or another team could snatch him up.
