Now that the 2013 MLB season is over, players eligible for free agency can now file for free agency and the Baltimore Orioles have seven eligible players as well as two more who options are likely to get declined and thus become free agent eligible.
Major League Baseball's rule of a qualifying offer, that would allow the current team of a player to receive a compensatory pick if the free agent player signs with someone else, begins in five days and players have up to a week after that to either accept or decline the qualifying offer. The key here is that the pending free agent player must have spent the entire season with the team, thus Roberts, McLouth and Hammel would be the only players to fall under this rule and with this year's qualifying offer of $14.1 million, do not look for the Orioles to submit any qualifying offers.
It is no secret as to who the Orioles 'keep list' is as Roberts is a great candidate to return and at a much reduced rate than his previous four year $40 million deal that expired at the end of this season. Roberts stayed healthy once he returned from his early season injury and his veteran presence at second base is a plus, as well as his ability to string out long at bats against pitchers.
Baltimore would also like to resign Feldman and McLouth, but the rumored deals that these two are expected to receive on the open market may force the Orioles to look elsewhere.
Outside of McLouth, Feldman and Roberts, the team is not likely to spend a lot of time on the other free agents, although they would not mind getting a couple of them back due to their familiarity with those players, such as Snyder, Hammel and Wada, but the price will have to be right, and we believe Hammel is a long shot to return after an abysmal 2013, and despite of a strong 2012.
Let the craziness that is MLB free agency begin, and let's see what the Orioles do, or as we fear, don't do this offseason.
