It’s Monday folks, and of course, that means it’s time for Orioles101’s Minor League Monday and today we have a special treat for you as we recently had the opportunity to sit down with the Baltimore Orioles sixth round draft pick in 2013, C Alex Murphy.
The MLB draft is nowhere near the spectacle that the NFL or even NBA drafts are, so if you are unfamiliar with Alex, we do not blame you, so let us enlighten you a little bit.
First and foremost, Murphy is a local product. He was born and raised in Maryland and went to Calvert Hall. Murphy is a smooth hitting catcher with some power still developing. He was the 2013 Gatorade Maryland Baseball Player of the Year, and got 31 games of professional ball in this summer playing for the Orioles Gulf Coast League affiliate. The 5'11'', 210 pounder hit .231 with one homer, nine RBI, seven doubles and three stolen bases. What has impressed us the most of Murphy has been his discipline at the plate as he drew 12 walks as well for a .330 OBP.
Now that we know Alex a little bit, let’s get to the interview.
Orioles101: If you can, describe the feeling you had when you were notified that the Orioles had drafted you in the sixth round of the 2013 MLB Draft.
The feeling and moment was indescribable. Growing up as a kid, I always rooted for the Orioles and being drafted by them is as close as you can get to a dream come true.
Orioles101: Were the Orioles on your radar prior to the draft, or did it come as a surprise when they selected you?
It wasn't a surprise when they (Orioles) selected me because they showed a lot of interest a couple weeks leading up to the draft.
Orioles101: Growing up in Maryland, playing for Calvert Hall, and the Orioles being your favorite team as a kid. How does it feel to wear the Orioles uniform?
Being able to wear the Oriole uniform is such an honor and is something that I've strived for my entire life.
Orioles101: You got some professional baseball under your belt this summer with the Gulf Coast League Orioles. What was the biggest difference for you?
The biggest adjustment for me going into the GCL season was the pitching. We saw good competition in high school, but there was still a big difference with all the movement on each pitch, and the pitchers throwing much harder than what I was used to seeing.
Orioles101: What did you learn about yourself and your skill set that you will need to work on as you prepare for 2014?
The biggest thing I learned this summer was that there is always something to work on and get better at, whether it's hitting or something defensively. Taking that into the offseason will better prepare me for the upcoming season.
Orioles101: For Orioles fans not yet familiar with you, how would you describe your game and what should fans expect to see when you play?
For fans that aren't familiar yet, I'd say I'm a hometown kid who works and plays hard with a lot of energy with a will to win.
Orioles101: You picked up your first professional career round tripper this summer, did you know it was gone when you hit it and how did it feel?
My first homer is something I'll never forget. I led off the inning and the pitcher gave me a pitch early in the count that I could drive and I put a good swing on it and it went over. The thing that meant the most to me was my day was down in Florida watching a couple games and he got to see me hit my first one.
Orioles101: Last one for you, who is your favorite football team, and who wins the Super Bowl this season?
My favorite team is the Ravens and I'm hoping that after this bye week we can pick things up and get back to winning some football games. It's still early to count us out, but I think if we can grab a couple wins in a row, it will set us up nicely to bring another title back to Baltimore.
Orioles101 would like to thank Alex for taking the time to sit down with us and responding to a few questions for our readers. Baltimore stacked up on catchers in the 2013 draft, but Orioles fans should remember the name Alex Murphy as he could end up being the best of the bunch.
