This is going to come as a bit of a surprise to Baltimore Orioles fans due to the lack of willingness for the team to spend big money on free agents, but the O's are worth over $1 billion according to a recent artice and are the 7th most valuable franchise in all of baseball.
It is somewhat rare for great articles to come out on baseball outside of the world of sports reporting, but yesterday was one of those days. Yahoo's Justin Maiman of the Daily Ticker posted a fantastic piece yesterday on the value of the New York Yankees and all of Major League Baseball teams.
Maiman references research done by Bloomberg Billionaires as the source of much of his information, but it is going to be quite a surprise for Orioles fans to see this.
The Baltimore Orioles, yes the team that yearly refuses to spend big money on free agents, is valued at $1.1 billion. Surprised? We were!
Now, do not get us wrong, it is no secret that the Orioles have always had the money to spend on free agents, but with this information, it is now even more unacceptable to fans that the team is unwilling to spend more on its' players.
Maiman points out that media opportunities have become a huge aspect of a team's worth, which makes the fact that Baltimore is worth a lot a little less surprising as they sport their own TV network in MASN. Orioles majority owner Peter Angelos, and it should be pointed out MASN owner as well, created the network as part of the agreement for the Washington Nationals to move to D.C. from Montreal.
We are going to dive into how this information is practically an insult to Orioles fans later, but at least Baltimore should be proud that they sport one of the most valuable baseball franchises in the game.
In case you were wondering, the Tampa Bay Rays came in last on the list valued at just $530 million.
Here is the top ten according to Maiman's report:
- 1 New York Yankees $3.3 Billion
- 2 Los Angeles Dodgers $2.1 Billion
- 3 Boston Red Sox $2.1 Billion
- 4 New York Mets $2.1 Billion
- 5 Chicago Cubs $1.3 Billion
- 6 San Francisco Giants $1.2 Billion
- 7 Baltimore Orioles $1.1 Billion
- 8 Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim $1.1 Billion
- 9 Philadelphia Phillies $1 Billion
- 10 Texas Rangers $1 Billion
