Although the first two doctor’s opinions did not recommend surgery for Manny Machado and his left knee’s medial patellofemoral ligament, the Baltimore Orioles announced that Machado will have reconstructive surgery on Monday.
Once the surgery takes place, there is an estimated 4-6 month rehabilitation period which means Machado could return as soon as mid-February or as late as mid-April.
The story broke last night and was first reported by MASN’s Roch Kubatko, which you can find his original story here.
“I sent my MRI results to a couple of doctors and knee specialists and we decided that in the long run and for my future as a baseball player, this surgery would be the best plan,” Machado said in a statement issued by the Orioles. “I will immediately begin the rehabilitation process in hopes of being ready for the start of Spring Training.”
We all remember the game when Machado suffered the injury in Tampa Bay. It was the final road game of the season and the Orioles were all but mathematically eliminated from the playoff picture and we all watched Manny fall to the ground when he hit first base awkwardly. If you listened closely enough you could have heard a collective gasp in Charm City.
“After conferring with several doctors, Manny has elected to have surgery to repair his left knee,” Duquette said. “He has the full support of the Orioles organization with this decision and we look forward to seeing him back on the field in Sarasota at full strength.”
Of course the overall hope is that Machado fully recovers in time to get in some Spring Training, but the Orioles will exercise extreme caution with him and if they feel he is not ready come Opening Day, then they will not rush him into playing.
The bottom line is that if Machado feels this is the best thing for his overall future in baseball, then we should take his word for it and wish him a speedy recovery to 100% health!
