After the Boston Red Sox had come back to take a 5-4 lead an inning earlier, Steve Pearce delivered a clutch one out, two run double in the bottom of the eighth inning to cap off a back and forth game with a 6-5 victory for the Baltimore Orioles.
Pearce's double was not only produced a lead for the Orioles, but it also capped off a three RBI night for himself as he also delivered a RBI double earlier in the game to get the scoring started for the Birds in the second inning. Steve led all players in the game with three RBI.
Baltimore got offensive production from several guys, including five players who had multi hit games. Although he only had one hit in the game, Brian Roberts delivered his eighth home run of the season, a solo shot in the bottom of the third.
Pearce (2-4, two doubles, three RBI), JJ Hardy (2-4, run scored), Matt Wieters (2-3, walk, RBI), Danny Valencia (2-4, run scored, RBI), and Nick Markakis (2-4, run scored) all had multi hit games for the Birds and drove in five of the team's six runs.
Wei-Yin Chen (7-7) got the start for the O's and pitched OK, as he lasted 5 1/3 innings, while allowing three runs on nine hits, one walk and five strikeouts. Unfortunately for Chen his ERA would increase to 4.07, which is one of the few times since he has been in Baltimore that his ERA is above four.
Josh Stinson came in relief of Chen and allowed his first runs this season as a reliever, but has certainly made a case for himself to be in the mix for the bullpen in the 2014 season. Kevin Gausman (3-5) wound up getting the win out of the pen as he worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts, while Jim Johnson pitched a scoreless ninth for his 49th save of the season. If Johnson can come on and get the save in today's game, he will become just the second player in MLB history to record back-to-back 50 save seasons joining Eric Gagne.
In the season finale today the Orioles will send their ace Chris Tillman (16-7) to the mound one last time as he looks for that elusive 17th win and will go up against John Lackey (10-13). First pitch for the final game of the 2013 season for the Birds will be at 1:35pm this afternoon.
