The 2013 season is dwindling down, but the Baltimore Orioles are still showing the hustle and determination that we as Orioles fans have come to expect under manager Buck Showalter. Miguel Gonzalez was absolutely fantastic on the mound and Matt Wieters drove in two of Baltimore's three runs en route to a 3-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays to secure a 10-9 series win as well.
Gonzalez (11-8) was masterful last night for the Birds and if not for a Jason Pridie error in the top of the first that allowed a run to score, Gonzalez would have tossed a shutout. Miguel did not allow a single earned run over seven innings of work, and he allowed just two hits, one walk and struck out five en route to his 11th victory of the season.
Tommy Hunter came in to pitch the eighth inning in relief of Gonzalez with a 3-1 lead, but struggled a bit and needed two straight strikeouts to end the inning and strand runners on second and third. Hunter did allow a run in the inning, as well as three hits, but the two strikeouts were huge.
Jim Johnson came on pitch the ninth and tossed a scoreless one at that. It was Johnson's 48th save of the season and if he can come up with two more over the last three games for the Birds, he will become just the second player in MLB history to have back-to-back 50 saves seasons.
Matt Wieters generated most of the offense last night for Baltimore as he hit a solo home run in the second inning to tie the game at one, and then hit a sac fly in the third for his second RBI of the night. Nick Markakis also had a RBI for the O's and went 2-4 with a double and a run scored in addition to the RBI. Brian Roberts had the other multi hit game for the O's going 2-4 with a run scored.
Baltimore will now begin their final series of the season, a three game set with the Boston Red Sox and will send Scott Feldman (5-5) to the mound for the start against Boston's Clay Buchholz (11-1). First pitch will be 7:05 pm.
