The Baltimore Orioles lost their fifth straight game on Monday, but that was one of the last things that Orioles players and fans were thinking about as both Manny Machado and Alexi Casilla sustained serious injuries. Machado will get a MRI today on his left knee while Casilla is being checked for a possible concussion.
Machado was running out an infield single in the top of the seventh inning and landed awkwardly resulting in his left knee buckling and Machado falling to the ground grabbing his knee and screaming in pain.
It was incredibly tough to watch, not only the injury itself and how Machado was reacting to it, but fellow Orioles teammates and even Tampa Bay Rays players and coaches as everyone was dead silent as one of the brightest young players in all of baseball was on the ground in excruciating pain.
When a player goes down like that, three things enter your mind immediately, Did he dislocate it? Did he break it? Or perhaps the worst, did he tear a ligament?
The way Machado fell, and the pain he was showing, the obvious assumption is a ligament tear, but Machado will get a MRI today on his knee before he, the Orioles, or doctors will announce the injury.
"Tough day," said catcher Matt Wieters. "First off, all our prayers are with Manny and hopefully the results come back clean and he'll be good to go in a little while. Alexi, too. All our prayers right now are with those guys. On top of that it was a tough loss, but right now we're just thinking about those guys. You never want to see that no matter where you are in the standings. It's tough. We fought all year with the guys in this clubhouse and to see two guys come out with injuries is never a good feeling as a teammate, especially guys who have played as hard as they have all year."
Casilla, who replaced Machado, sustained an injury later in the game when he was sprinting backwards trying to catch a pop up in shallow right field and dove for the catch and his head went right into Nick Markakis' thigh and appeared to be knocked out temporarily. He will receive a CAT scan and tested for a possible concussion.
"I'm coming full speed, he's going out full speed," Markakis said. "The ball is in the lights. I'm trying to get to a position where I think it is going to come out. It came out. I saw it at the last second. Thought about doing a slide. Saw him out at the corner of my eye. Saw he left his feet. I tried to pull up and get out of the way. It was just bang-bang. Me coming full speed, him coming full speed. It was like trying to stop a train on a dime. It's tough. I'm just glad he's OK. He got banged up a little bit, but when it's all said and done, if he's OK that's all that really matters. I'm not a doctor or anything but when he was out there I could have sworn he was knocked out. But I'm not a doctor, I don't know. He was laying there. Me and Jonesy (Adam Jones) were just trying to get him to sit still until somebody got out there. He kind of looked dazed and confused. And it's just a tough day, tough series all the way around. You've got nine guys on the field going all out and trying to do the best that they can and sometimes things don't work out the way you want them to work out. When it's all said and done, I just hope everybody is OK at the end of the day."
James Loney came in to pinch hit to lead off the bottom of the ninth and proceeded to deliver a walkoff solo home run off of Tommy Hunter to complete the four game sweep of the Orioles and all but eliminate the Birds from playoff contention.
Baltimore will return home for their final six games of the season and begin a three game set with the Toronto Blue Jays tonight and will send Chris Tillman (16-7) to the mound against Todd Redmond (4-2).
