On a night that many thought you would be able to hear crickets in Camden Yards, the Baltimore Orioles had a very nice crowd and used three solo home runs and a great pitching performance from Miguel Gonzalez to secure a 3-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox.
Solo homers by Adam Jones, JJ Hardy and Brian Roberts were all the Orioles would need Thursday Night thanks to Gonzalez (9-7). Coming off of a string of unusually poor performances, Gonzalez seemed to be back on track as his command was good and he was locating his pitches where he wanted most of the time.
Gonzo gave the Birds a much needed long start as well following the short outing from Zach Britton on Wednesday. Miguel went seven innings, while allowing just one run on four hits, one walk and striking out six on 100 pitches, 66 of which went for strikes.
Tommy Hunter pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Birds and Jim Johnson came on in the ninth to secure his 42ndsave of the season.
Jones got the scoring started for the O’s in the first inning when he blasted a solo shot to give Baltimore a 1-0 lead. His homer was his 30thof the season and it also gave him his 100thRBI as well to make he and Chris Davis the first Orioles duo since Brady Anderson and Rafael Palmerio in 1996 to each have at least 30 homers and 100 RBI in the same season.
With the game tied at one, Hardy and Roberts each hit solo homers in the fifth to complete the night’s scoring for the Birds, but it gave them a 3-1 lead that they would not relinquish. Hardy hit quite a milestone as well with his solo homer and he is just the 9thshortstop since 1901 to have three or more 25 home run season.
The seven hits the Orioles had in the game came from just four hitters as Jones, Hardy and Matt Wieters each had two hits apiece, while Roberts added the final one to lead the O's offense.
Baltimore will return to action tonight as they send Scott Feldman (4-4) to the mound against White Sox starter John Danks (4-11) as they look to gain some ground in the AL Wildcard Race. The O's picked up a game on Tampa Bay, Oakland and New York, as all three teams lost yesterday, while gaining a half game on the idle Indians as well.
