It was not a pretty night for the Baltimore Orioles in Boston, as the division leading Red Sox put a hurting on the Birds as they rocked Wei-Yin Chen and the Baltimore offense could not get much going.
Chen (7-7) struggled all night and it all came down to command, not control. There is a difference in command and control, in that control is simply throwing strikes, which Chen was doing. His command was terrible as he consistently left the ball up in the zone and over the plate way too often. Unfortunately for Chen and the Orioles, his worst outing of his career could not have come at a worse time for the Birds as they had a chance to gain some ground in both races, but it was not meant to be last night.
It was the shortest outing of his career as he lasted just 3 2/3 innings, Chen allowed a career high eight runs on eight hits, three walks and five strikeouts on the night. He allowed three long balls last night and has now allowed six home runs in his last three starts.
"I have to apologize to my team. I didn't want to hurt my team," Chen said through his interpreter, Tim Lin, while standing outside the visiting clubhouse. I still have to keep my same approach and do my work, same preparation every day. I just need to work with Billy (Castro) in my bullpen session. Nothing different, I just need to come back strong."
Baltimore's bullpen combined to allow five runs the rest of the way, and the pain in the O's side last night was Red Sox outfielder Shane Victorino as he went 3-3 with two home runs, four runs scored and seven RBI.
The Orioles offense didn't have an answer for Red Sox starter Felix Doubront (10-6). Baltimore managed just four hits and two runs on the night as JJ Hardy and Danny Valencia each had two hits apiece, while Manny Machado and Brian Roberts each had an RBI.
There is a bright side to the loss, it is just that, one loss. No matter the score a loss is a loss, so the Birds can bounce right back tonight as they send Bud Norris (9-10) to the mound for the start against John Lackey (8-11).
