The Hall of Fame will induct its new class on September 8 in Springfield, Mass. It was recently announced that Rick Pitino, head coach of the Louisville Cardinals, would head up that class. Pitino recently won 'The Big Dance' this past season and he also won the NCAA Championship with their rival Kentucky Wildcats back in 1996. Along with him will be another legendary coach in Jerry Tarkanian, who affectionately became known as Tark the Shark during his days at UNLV. Tark led the "Running" Rebels to four Final Fours and a National Championship in 1990.
Other coaches to enter the Hall include Guy Lewis of the Houston Cougars and Sylvia Hatchell of the North Carolina Tar Heels. Lewis was the head coach of the Cougars for 30 years, 1956 through 1986, and at a period when many were trying to get rid of the slam dunk he encouraged it being a high percentage shot. Lewis was the coach of the famous Phi Slama Jama and even though they did not win the championship, they were a part of one of the most legendary games in basketball history as Houston went down the N.C. State Wolf Pack in 1983.
Sylvia Hatchell is the coach at the University of North Carolina and is the second winningest coach in women's NCAA history behind the great Pat Sumitt. Hatchell led her Tar Heels to a National Championship in 1994. Another legend in the women's game is also going to the Hall of Fame, Dawn Staley from the University of Virginia, USA Basketball and WNBA fame.
From the NBA players side of things, Gary Payton and Bernard King are the headliners. Gary Payton was known for his passing and his defense with the Seattle Super Sonics and for that he has earned the nickname of "The Glove." He was a nine time All Star, a nine time All Defensive First Team and he won NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award in 1996.
Bernard King made a name for himself as a scorer from his time in the NBA, most notably with the New York Knicks. He was a four time NBA All Star, a scoring champion in 1985 (32.9 points per game) and was also the Comeback Player of the Year in 1980.
The others that are to be inducted include Edwin Henderson, Indiana Pacer Roger Brown, Oscar Schmidt of Brasil, Richie Guerin from the New York Knicks and Russ Granik.
