The Falcons have given a two year contract extension to defensive coordinator Mike Nolan. Nolan, who has been the Falcons defensive coordinator for two seasons, enjoyed one solid season, and one very bad one this year.
The Falcons were 21st in passing defense and 31st in rushing defense this season after finishing 23rd in passing defense and 21st in rushing defense last season.
The big difference from last year to this year was takeaways. The Falcons were tied for fourth overall in takeaways with 31 last season. This year, they only had 21, good for 23rd in the league.
The Falcons dealt with a lot of injuries on defense, particularly to key starters, including Sean Weatherspoon, Kroy Biermann and Asante Samuel. With the improvement of rookie CBs Desmond Trufant and Robert Alford from this year to next along with getting Weatherspoon and Biermann back next year, the Falcons are hoping for a turnaround from Coach Nolan and his defense.
Plus with a good draft this year, there is the potential that Nolan could some top defenders to add to his defensive unit that struggled mightily this year.
