Atlanta Falcons Must Stop Green Bay Packers’ Eddie Lacy

Fans down south hear the name Eddie Lacy and they think of the beast of a running back that was so important to Alabama's NCAA championship run last season, and was paramount in defeating the local Georgia Bulldogs in last year's SEC championship game.  He becomes the opposition again for the many of the locals here in Atlanta, but it will come this time on the professional level.

Eddie Lacy was drafted by the Packers this year after the Packers decided not to sign Steven Jackson in the offseason.  Lacy's skills have translated from the college game to the NFL very well.

He's closing in on a 1000 yard season as the Packers' feature back and has 822 yards rushing, averaging 4 yards per carry and has six touchdowns.  He is set to pose some big problems for a Falcons run defense that ranks 30th in rushing yards per game.

For the Falcons to have any shot to win on Sunday, they must stop Eddie Lacy from being productive.

Sean Weatherspoon noted how important it was to stop Lacy early.  "It'll be big, you want to get a lot of people to him early.  He poses a big threat, because he's such a big guy and he has sweet feet."

The Falcons missed 14 tackles last week in Buffalo, and that number could grow, facing Lacy.  Those sweet feet and the powerful 5'11 230 pound frame have been tough to bring down this season, and even during the Packers current five game winless streak, it hasn't really stopped Lacy from being productive.  He's rushed for over 100 yards in two of them, but was limited in their last game against Detroit because they got down early.

The Falcons run defense has been shredded this year, and has given up an average of 135.4 rushing yards per game.  Even without Aaron Rodgers, the Packers will try to take advantage of the Falcons penetrable run defense early on.  If the Falcons do not stop Lacy early, it could be a long, cold day up in Green Bay.
