With the Falcons falling to 1-4 after what was a must win against the New York Jets on Monday Night Football, rumors have begun to swirl about whether or not the Falcons would trade Tony Gonzalez to the surprisingly good 5-0 Kansas City Chiefs, Gonzalez's former team before he became a Falcon.
The move could certainly be justified. The Falcons could move Gonzalez in hopes of getting a good draft pick next year. While it would extremely sad, this year isn't going anything like the Falcons had hoped it would, and their playoff hopes are on life support right now.
But Coach Mike Smith was quick to deny any truth to these claims, declaring the rumors to be a complete falsehood.
“That’s preposterous that Tony would be traded. He’s an integral part of our offense and has been since he’s been here."
Should Gonzalez be moved to improve the team for next year, or is it still too early to give up on the season? Coach Smith might be saying the right thing right now, but there has to be some inkling of doubt in his mind about this season. However painful it would be to move Gonzalez, it could benefit this franchise in the long run.
