Today was a rather eventful day at Flowery Branch with more injury news regarding two very important Falcons players, and some free agent signings.

Firstly, the injury news.  Steven Jackson's thigh injury is serious enough to keep him out of the game on Sunday against Miami.  His timetable to return is unknown, but he isn't expected to miss more than a few weeks.

LB Sean Weatherspoon's news is far worse.  The signal caller of the defense has been placed on the short term IR due to a foot injury.  This will rule him out for eight games at the minimum.  He will not be able to return until week 11 at the earliest.

In response to losing Weatherspoon and Biermann, the Falcons have signed LBs Omar Gaither and Jamar Chaney to the team.

Gaither is an eight year veteran, who after a promising start with the Philadelphia Eagles, has become more of a special teams player over the years.  In 2007, he posted 102 combined tackles, 69 total tackles, eight pass deflections and four tackles for loss.  This was, across the board, the best year of his career.

Last year with Oakland he posted 14 combined tackles, nine solo tackles and two tackles for loss.

Chaney also started his career with the Eagles and has played only four years in the league.  He had his best year in 2011 when he had 92 combined tackles, 67 total tackles, eight pass deflections and four tackles for loss.

Last year, there was a severe regression in which he posted 24 combined tackles, 17 total tackles and only one pass deflection.

Neither of these players are going to turn the Falcons defense around or be able to replace Weatherspoon or Biermann, but holes needed to be filled.  Hopefully Chaney and Gaither can fill them admirably.

Both of them haven't played this year, so it will likely take them a couple of weeks to get the hang of defensive coordinator Mike Nolan's complex defense.

The injuries are piling up, and we're only at week 3.  We already have two starters out for the rest of the year (Biermann and Bradie Ewing), and now the Falcons' have lost Weatherspoon for an extended period and Jackson for a hopefully brief period.
