Injuries hit the Falcons hard yesterday. On the Falcons' first offensive series, Steven Jackson and Bradie Ewing left and did not return after suffering injuries. Later in the game Asante Samuel and Kroy Biermann were injured and did not return either.
Today, we have learned that both Biermann and Ewing are out for the season. This marks the second time in Ewing's two season in the NFL in which he has suffered a season ending injury. In his first two seasons, he's only played in two games (both this year). It is reported that Ewing's injury is a serious shoulder injury.
Biermann's injury is an Achillies tear that will sideline him the rest of the year. These are two huge losses for the Falcons.
Ewing was starting at FB and is mainly responsible for opening up holes for RB Steven Jackson to burst through on rushing attempts.
Biermann was starting at DE and is the Falcons' utility knife, capable of rushing the passer and dropping into coverage, playing a DE/LB hybrid.
The Falcons struggled in both of these areas last year as a team with run blocking and pass rushing. Losing these two players will make these holes even more gaping for a team that has many holes to fill.
Ewing will likely be replaced by Jason Snelling, the team's third string running back, who is definitely big enough to play fullback.
Or Thomas Dimitroff may see what he can pull off via free agency or a trade with another team. Either way, this is grim news.
There are no further reports related to Samuel or Jackson at this time.
