The Atlanta Braves took a small gamble with a potentially large reward by signing former standout prospect Mat Gamel to a minor league contract, reports.

Gamel, who was once viewed as Prince Fielder's potential replacement at first base for the Milwaukee Brewers, has had an injury plagued career. He missed all of 2013 with his second torn ACL, just months after tearing it the first time in 2012.

The 28-year-old Gamel hit .304 with 105 homers in seven minor league seasons, but he has seen limited action in the Major Leagues to the tune of a .229 average in just 106 games.

Gamel, who hits lefty, is expected to spell Chris Johnson at third base, but can also give Freddie Freeman a break and may play some corner outfield.
