The St. Louis Cardinals won game three of the World Series over the Boston Red Sox in the most unusual of ways, taking the game on a walk-off obstruction call. As angry as a lot of Red Sox fans are, umpire Jim Joyce made the right call.
The play started with the Cards having runners on second and third and one out in the bottom of the ninth of a tie game. John Jay grounded to Dustin Pedroia, who made a great diving play to throw out Yadier Molina at home. All hell broke lose when Jarrod Saltalamacchia attempted to throw out Allen Craig at third but threw the ball into left field.
Craig then tripped over Will Middlebrooks as he broke for home, and though he was thrown out easily, Joyce had already called obstruction on Middlebrooks.
And he got the call right. He nailed it, in fact.
Obstruction is a rarely used or even needed call, and though it's unfortunate the game had to end that way, that's the only correct way it could have ended.
Kudos, Jim Joyce. You've proven yourself as one of the best umps in the bigs again.
