Instead of going to Craig Kimbrel for a two-inning save, the Atlanta Braves endured a heartbreaking loss to lose the National Leauge Division Series 3-1, thanks to a Juan Uribe go-ahead homer in a 4-3 game on Tuesday.
Yasiel Puig started the fateful eighth inning with a double off David Carpenter. After fouling off a couple bunt attempts to move the tying run to third base, Uribe belted a homer to left field to seal the Braves' elimination.
The homer wasted an incredible start by Freddy Garcia in which he went six innings and gave up two runs on two solo shots by Carl Crawford. He matched Clayton Kershaw on short rest pitch-for-pitch, who also gave up two unearned runs.
Jose Constanza gave the Braves a brief lead with a pinch-hit single in the seventh to drive in Elliot Johnson, who had just gotten on base via a triple.
Many, including the man himself, lobbied to have Craig Kimbrel enter in the eighth inning for a two-inning save, though he's never completed more than four outs in a Major League outing. Carpenter held the Braves' oft-injured and recently unstable bullpen together throughout the year. The move to have Carpenter set up Kimbrel at least seemed logical, though it didn't pan out.
It was still a great season for the Braves, who put together a 96-win season and won their first National League East title since 2005. A young core will return along with a rejuvenated bullpen to Atlanta with postseason experience and a division that probably won't change too much.
