Clayton Kershaw pitched like Clayton Kershaw, dominating over seven innings in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 6-1 win over the Atlanta Braves in game one of the National League Division Series at Turner Field.
There just wasn't a whole lot the Braves could do against Kershaw's 12 strikeouts, nine of which came over the final 11 batters he faced. The only run the Braves mustered off him came when Chris Johnson drove in an RBI-single in the fourth inning.
But Kershaw already had all the cushion he needed, thanks to a shaky start by Kris Medlen. Medlen struck out the side in the first, but his performance only went downhill from there.
After the Dodgers put together a two-run second inning, it seemed the Braves were possibly finished as early as the third when Adrian Gonzalez hit a two-run homer. Medlen would leave after just four-plus innings and five runs allowed.
Of course, it would have helped if the Braves' offense didn't strike out 15 times, though Kershaw has kind of led the National League in ERA three straight years.
It's not the best of starts for the Braves, who are 5-15 in home playoff games since 2000. They'll get another crack at 6:07 on Friday in game two of the five-game series.
