There are certain unwritten rules in baseball about respecting your opponent and not being a showboat. Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez broke all of them Wednesday when he stared down Paul Maholm after a homer and talked trash all the way around the bases. That led to Brian McCann confronting him before he even got to the plate, and he was right to do so.
It was the second time in the last couple of weeks McCann has confronted a showboating player after a homer. He got in Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez's face after he admired a homer, leading to a quality confrontation.
"Mac doesn't stand for that stuff," Chris Johnson said on braves.com. "I don't think Mac was interested in having that kid go home and touch home plate, so he met him halfway up the line and had some words for him. But he handled it the way a true pro should handle it and back up his pitcher."
McCann stuck up for the unwritten rules, Paul Maholm, Freddie Freeman and the rest of his team when he didn't let Gomez touch home plate Wednesday. This isn't football. You don't talk junk to people after you've done something good. You don't stare people down like you're threatening them.
And you also don't get around McCann's girth after you've done so.
Some are saying that McCann and the Braves were wrong for sticking up for themselves. That's simply absurd. If the players can't police themselves anymore, who will correct this kind of idiocy?
Well played, Mac. No one will argue with you being Atlanta's enforcer.
