The Atlanta Braves scored four runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Chicago Cubs 9-5 Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
The Braves jumped out to a 4-1 lead early in the game, courtesy of home runs by Chris Johnson and Freddie Freeman.
But Chicago came storming back and tied the game at five apiece heading into the ninth inning.
After the would-be third out of the ninth popped out of Cubs catcher Dioner Navarro's glove, Brian McCann singled and the Braves rallied for four runs on the way to their 91st victory of the season.
Navarro, Starlin Castro, and Donnie Murphy all homered to lead the Cubs offense.
Paul Maholm started the game for Atlanta, pitching 5 1/3 innings and allowing four earned runs.
Craig Kimbrel pitched a scoreless ninth for the Braves but was not eligible for the save.
The Braves magic number was reduced to 1 with the win. They can clinch the National League East division title with a Washington Nationals loss later this evening.
The second game of the series between the Braves and Cubs is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon at 4:05 PM in Chicago. Kris Medlen will get the start for the Braves and will face the Cubs Travis Wood.
