The Braves magic number fell to five with the win. They maintain a 10.5 game lead over the second place Washington Nationals, who are playing host to the Philadelphia Phillies tonight.

Medlen (14-12, 3.32), registered the win for the Braves in what was quite possibly his strongest outing of the season.

Padres starter Robbie Erlin (2-3, 5.18) pitched well, allowing two runs on eight hits and striking out three.

Freeman continued to plead his case for National League MVP with three more hits and his 99th RBI of the season. Chris Johnson and Justin Upton each added two hits apiece for the Braves.

The Padres offense mustered five hits all night, including a Chase Headley ninth inning home run off Braves closer Craig Kimbrel.

Kimbrel settled down and collected his MLB leading and career-best 47th save of the season.

The Braves will close out the series with the Padres tomorrow afternoon at Turner Field. Atlanta will send Julio Teheran (12-7, 3.05) to the mound to face Burch Smith (0-1, 9.17). Game time is 1:35 PM.
