Jordan Schafer has been blazing hot, and until today's day game against the New York Mets, showed no signs whatsoever of cooling off. Unfortunately, those signs manifested themselves in some lower back pain for Schafer after notching his 4th hit in 5 at-bats.
Schafer had already put together 3 hits and 3 steals before some signs of back pain began to show. After deciding to tough it out, he smacked his fourth hit of the game, and while retreating to second, showed signs of increased pain in his lower back. Schafer was forced to leave the game in the bottom of the 7th inning as a result, with Elijah Johnson pinch-running in his absence.
Fredi Gonzalez and the Braves organization believe Schafer may be suffering from some lower back spasms, and have listed Schafer's status as day-to-day. Since losing Jason Heyward for the regular season, the Braves have relied heavily on Schafer to fill the leadoff role the Braves have been looking for the majority of this season.
Thus far, Schafer has more than proven himself in the lead-off role, matching his career best with 4 hits and 3 steals today. His aggressive and successful base running has helped set up the Braves hitters who follow him in the line up with ample RBI opportunities.
After being released by the Astros in the off-season, and subsequently claimed by the Braves, Schafer's career has seen a resurgence of sorts. With the Braves lineup currently plagued by injuries, losing Schafer long-term would weaken an oft-injured Braves outfield.
