The legend of Even Gattis these days is supported almost solely by the incredible April he put together, but the Atlanta Braves really need their slumping rookie to get hot with his bat, particularly since Jason Heyward is out for a month with a broken jaw.
The truth is, fans have been on B.J. Upton's case for the entire season, but the surprising fact is that since June 1, Gattis has put up an abysmal .188 average. He also hasn't homered since July 24.
Upton, meanwhile, definitely hasn't been good, but he has actually been loads better than Gattis with a .222 average.
Granted, there's the whole hitting in runners scoring position thing and the strikeouts, but the point still stands that Gattis must make an adjustment. Major League pitchers have figured out that they can throw him up and in all day, and he'll chase it all day. They finally figured him out.
Which means Gattis has to reinvent himself, to a degree. Everyone saw his potential in the April and May, and slumps are obviously part of the game.
But the Braves desperately need Gattis to step up.
