Jason Heyward Out a Month with Fractured Jaw, Could Miss Rest of Atlanta Braves’ Regular Season

The infirmary just keeps growing for the Atlanta Braves. This time it's Jason Heyward (again) who is out four to six weeks with a fractured jaw after being hit in the face with a fastball from Jon Niese in the Braves' win over the New York Mets on Wednesday, foxsportssouth.com reports.

Heyward had a 1-2 pitch from Niese graze the ear flap on his batting helmet before slamming into his jaw. Incredibly, Heyward actually stayed on his feet a moment before going down. Though he was spitting blood, Heyward never lost consciousness. He walked off the field under his own power.

"When you get hit in the head, everything comes into play: teeth, jaw, concussion," Fredi Gonzalez said after the game. "Hopefully, the least of three, maybe some teeth, instead of a broken jaw or a concussion. But we'll let the doctors put him through the paces there at the hospital and keep our fingers crossed."

It's been a strange season for Heyward. He started the season poorly before being sidelined for nearly a month after having his appendix removed. Heyward carried a .146 average into June but has since had a resurgence at the plate, particularly after being moved to the lead-off spot.

Heyward has hit .353 with five homers in his last 22 games. It seems his season is done with a .253 average, 13 homers 37 RBIs and 60 runs scored.
