Justin Upton’s Walk-off Homer Gives Atlanta Braves Win Over Washington Nationals in 10 Innings

In this budding rivalry between the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals, Justin Upton just made it that much sweeter for Braves fans with his walk-off homer Friday night in a 3-2 win at Turner Field.

After Ian Krol got Jason Heyward to ground out to start the 10th, Upton worked a 2-2 count. Krol hung a curveball that Upton belted for his second walk-off homer of the year.

Alex Wood was originally in position for his third win, but Luis Ayala gave up a game-tying single to Jayson Werth in the eighth inning.

The only reason Ayala was put in the game to begin with was Luis Avilan's poor outing. After sitting down the first two batters he faced, Avilan gave up a double to Ryan Zimmerman and hit Bryce Harper in the shoulder with a fastball. The Nationals' bench wasn't exactly happy, both benches were warned and Fredi Gonzalez yanked Avilan on the spot.

That wasted Wood's outing after his 6 1/3 innings and career-best nine strikeouts.

The only run Wood allowed came after he plunked Harper with a curveball in the third inning. Harper moved to third on Werth's first hit of the game, and Ian Desmond grounded into a double play to bring home the run.

The Braves have now won 18 of their last 20 games. Their National League East game now sits at 15 1/2 games and their magic number to clinch is 26.
