The Atlanta Braves have lost Tyler Pastornicky for the year with a torn ACL, Dan Uggla is on the disabled list for eye surgery and Paul Janish can't really hit. Frank Wren was already shopping the waiver wire for a backup infielder who would provide an offensive upgrade, and he may find it in the Tampa Bay Rays' Ryan Roberts.
The Rays designated Roberts for assignment Thursday after hitting .247 with five homers in 60 games. Roberts has played first base, second base and third base this season.
Roberts has struggled since hitting .279 in 110 games with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2009 and hasn't touched .250 in a full season since.
For those concerned with getting Andrelton Simmons a day off, Roberts played three innings of shortstop with the Diamondbacks in 2011. That's not to say he'd definitely fill in, but it's possible.
