The Cubs have the option of releasing or trading Marmol, who has a 5.86 ERA by giving up 26 hits and 21 walks in 27 2/3 innings, even though they owe him $5.3 million for the rest of the season.
Interestingly enough, most of Marmol's appearances have actually gone without a hitch. It's just that when it's bad for Marmol, everything blows up, usually costing him three or four runs in just 1/3 of an inning.
The Braves, albeit with Jonny Venters and Eric O'Flaherty out for the year, have still put up a big league-best 2.77 bullpen ERA, but the need for stability outweighs the need for a veteran arm. Still, they could end up making a swap with someone for the right man.
