The University of Pittsburgh Product is coming off another fine 2013 NFL campaign in which he caught 82 passes for 954 yards and a team-high 10 touchdowns. Fitzgerald was one of the main reasons the Red Birds showed a five-game improvement in 2013 from their dreadful 5-11 campaign in 2012.
Fitzgerald had a TD reception in Arizona's 32-0 preseason triumph over the Texans last Saturday. He reflected on his 2013 season.
"It was OK, "Fitzgerald said via usatoday.com. "I got a lot of touchdowns, double digit touchdowns, (which is) always where I try to get to, and I'm still trying for that every year, just making sure I'm catching every ball, being effective when my number's called."
The Minneapolis, MN native is spending his summer hosting a bevy of NFL players at his annual workouts on the University of Minnesota campus with trainer Bill Welle and also putting six weeks of skill work and intensive conditioning before training camp begins on July 26.
As usual, Fitzgerald's conditioning is first rate.
"I'm in real good shape," he said. "I feel like I'm right where I need to be in terms of my conditioning, route running and everything like that. It's good to have Ryan (Lindley, the Cardinals' backup quarterback) out here going over some plays that we're going to run during the season and getting that continuity."
That's always important. Fitzgerald will lead a dynamic contingent of dangerous wide receivers that include Michael Floyd and Ted Ginn, Jr. The Cardinals finished 10-6 last season and should be in the thick of the rugged NFC West title chase until the very end, just like last season.
Fitzgerald is really looking forward to the upcoming season. It should be another exciting year in the desert.
"I just cherish every moment I have on the field. It's what I love to do. I really enjoy it. It's fun to go out there and compete and be around the guys every day. I just cherish that, " Fitzgerald enthused.
It should be a very interesting season with number 11 leading the way.
