If the Arizona Cardinals are going to make it to the NFC playoffs, they are going to do so on the backs of their defense.

Karlos Dansby returned an interception 23 yards for a touchdown and John Abraham tackled Kellen Clemens for a safety to lead the Red Birds to a 30-10 triumph over the St. Louis Rams yesterday at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale.

The win lifted the Cardinals to 8-5 and was their fifth victory in their last six games. Arizona snapped an eight-game losing streak against NFC West foes.

"It was a big point of emphasis this week to try to get this win. To lose as many games as we lost in this division, quite frankly is embarrassing. It was a step in the right direction for us," Larry Fitzgerald told azcentral.com.

The Rams dipped to 5-8.

Arizona rookie safety Tyrann Mathieu may have torn his ACL in the hard-hitting contest. Mathieu was carted off the field in the third quarter on a free kick after the team allowed a safety. Following the game, head coach Bruce Arians said it looked like Mathieu had tore his ACL. The "Honey Badger" is set to have an MRI later today in order to confirm the injury.

Quarterback Carson Palmer, who was listed as questionable entering the game with a sore elbow, looked anything but hurt as he completed 27 of 32 passes for 269 yards and a touchdown. Fitzgerald caught 12 passes for 96 yards and a seven-yard score from Palmer. It was his most receptions since he matched his career high with 13 against Seattle on Oct. 18, 2009.

Andre Ellington led the rushing attack with 46 yards on 11 carries and a six-yard TD burst while Rashard Mendenhall added 41 yards on 11 carries and a three-yard scoring run that gave the Cards an early 7-0 lead.

Rashad Johnson had the other interception from Clemens (16-27, 181 yards, O TD, 2 INT). The Rams' leading rusher, Zac Stacy was held to just 25 yards on 14 carries and a one-yard TD run.

The Cards recorded four sacks, including three by Abraham. Dansby had the other.

Jay Feely missed on his two field goal attempts.

Palmer was sacked just once as the offensive line, who have been shaky lately, did a much better job this time around.

No doubt, this was an impressive victory.
