The rookie safety from LSU recorded 21 tackles, had five passes defensed, one interception and one sack last month. Due to his excellence, the "Honey Badger" was named the NFC's defensive rookie of the month for October.
The dynamic Mathieu is the first safety to capture the award since Kansas City's Eric Berry in December 2010, according to Randall Liu, the NFL's director of NFC communications. He ranks second on the Cardinals with 47 tackles, has two interceptions and one forced fumble.
The 21-year-old became the third Cardinals player to win the award, joining Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie in December 2008 and Simeon Rice in September 1996.
The New Orleans, LA native has made quite an impact in Arizona's secondary. Mathieu, who dropped to the third round in April’s NFL draft because of his numerous off-the-field issues, has started six of eight games for the Red Birds. He, along with teammate Andre Ellington, are considered two of the bigger steals of the draft.
