"Arizona Cardinals made quite a statement on Sunday when they throttled the Atlanta Falcons, 27-13. Not only did they completely dominate the contest, they showed opposing clubs that they should be a force to be reckoned with moving forward.
It's also very nice being 4-4 instead of 3-5 heading into their bye week, that's for sure.
That's for sure. But to their credit, the Red Birds were flying high at University of Phoenix Stadium. Their defense was dominant, forcing four interceptions from Matt Ryan. Ryan was also sacked four times and Atlanta was held off the touchdown board until an oh-by-the-way TD late in the fourth stanza.
"We knew that if we could get pressure on Matt (Ryan) and get him to have the happy feet we would have a good opportunity to get some interceptions,” cornerback Patrick Peterson stated.
Rookie running back Andre Ellington stepped in for the injured Rashard Mendenhall (toe) and had a breakout game, gaining a game-high 154 yards on the ground on 15 carries. His 80-yard scoring gallop tied for the third longest touchdown run in team history.
"It started with the guys up front,” Ellington told azcentral.com. “The receivers made blocks downfield. I was able to get around the corner and score.”
It was an electrifying run and one that got the home crowd in Glendale all pumped up.
“We talk about it every week in our offensive meetings, about explosive plays,” said wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, who caught the 800th pass of his career and scored on a 10-yard toss from Carson Palmer. “We were able to have a few of those today. We left a couple on the field, but still, it’s more than we had last week. That’s a step in the right direction.”
