During his 11-year NFL career, Carson Palmer has been on some good teams and bad teams.

In order to give the Arizona Cardinals a fighting chance of being a good team in 2013, he needs to improve. And fast.

“We all need to step up our game,” Palmer told “Everybody needs to step up their game. Mainly me being the quarterback – that’s your job. We have to keep growing.”

The University of USC product has thrown eight touchdown passes but also 13 interceptions, second most in the league this season. It's not all his fault though as he has been running for his life behind Arizona's porous offensive line. Case in point, Palmer was sacked seven times and pressured many more times in Arizona's 34-22 setback to Seattle last Thursday at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale.

“He’s running for his life,” head coach Bruce Arians said. “That’s not his style.”

Palmer is your classic pocket passer and he needs to be protected in order to be successful. He can't be lying on his back and help lead the Red Birds to the NFC playoffs.

“I’ve got to give him credit for standing,” Arians explained. “When you are hit that many times and you still stand in there … looking back, neither interception was his fault whatsoever. Overall he protected the football like he needed to. We’ve got to make better plays.”

The 33-year-old Palmer fired two interceptions against the Seahawks. He has just one 300-yard passing effort this season. That was quite a while ago now - in the season-opener against the Rams.

He still has a strong arm but unless the offensive line improves and he makes better decisions, it's going to be a long final nine games for the Cardinals.
