Their defense did it again.

For the second consecutive week the Arizona Cardinals displayed an impressive defensive showing, sacking quarterback Cam Newton seven times and adding three interceptions as the Red Birds whipped the Carolina Panthers, 22-6 this afternoon at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale.

The victory lifted Arizona's record to 3-2 while the Panthers dipped to 1-3.

Linebacker Daryl Washington, appearing in his first game of the season after serving a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, sacked Newton twice and added an interception. Calais Campbell added a pair of sacks and a safety and Karlos Dansby chipped in with two sacks and an interception.

Safety Tyrann Mathieu added the other Cardinals sack. Cornerback Patrick Peterson had the other Arizona interception on an under thrown ball from Newton.

The defense's stellar effort made up for a sluggish performance on the offensive side of the ball for the Red Birds. Carson Palmer struggled for most of the day, tossing three interceptions and throwing for just 175 yards. He did fire a seven-yard TD pass to tight end Jim Dray in the fourth quarter to conclude the game's scoring.

Rookie Andre Ellington looked good at running back for the Cardinals, gaining a team-high 52 yards on the ground. He added four receptions for 31 yards. Michael Floyd led all Arizona receivers with five catches for 61 yards.

Rashard Mendenhall added 43 rushing yards and a one-yard scoring plunge.

However, it was Arizona's suffocating defense that was the star of the show today.
