Arizona Cardinals’ Offense a Work in Progress

The Arizona Cardinals have scored a grand total of 20 points in their last two games and are still 1-1 in those two contests.

They're fortunate in that regard. Arizona's defense, especially Patrick Peterson, was excellent Sunday against Tampa Bay but in order for the Red Birds to be successful this season their offense is going to have to improve if they are to compete in the rugged NFC West.

There are reasons for Arizona's struggles, of course. The Cardinals are getting used to head coach Bruce Arians' system. They have a new (but improved) quarterback in Carson Palmer. The offensive line and running attack are struggling right now. Tight end Rob Housler is working his way back into shape after dealing with a high ankle sprain.

And so on. One major Achilles heel presently is that the Cards have converted just two of 21 third down opportunities in their two victories. It's hard to win that way even though Arizona managed to do so against the Bucs by converting just one of 10 third down attempts.

If there is a positive side, the Red Birds did manage to roll up 209 offensive yards in the second half against Tampa Bay. They hope to keep that trend going from the start when they face the Panthers on Sunday in Glendale.

"It’s part of growing as a unit,” Palmer explained to “A new system, new players, there’s not a lot of continuity, really anywhere. “We will continue to get better.”
