Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald was far from 100 percent on Sunday during his team's 25-21 victory over the Detroit Lions due to a sore hamstring. He gutted things out as best he could though but ended up with just two receptions for 33 yards on the day.
That's a far cry from his usual standard.
Fitzgerald's hamstring was ailing him so much that he could not return to action during Arizona's game-winning drive in the fourth quarter. He had to be really hurting for that to happen.
“I didn’t want to be a liability for my team,” Fitzgerald told azcardinals.com. “A couple of years back I would’ve tried to keep going, but Kerry (Taylor) and I have been working together for a year now and I knew he was prepared.”
Taylor was just promoted from the practice squad the day before the Lions game and sparkled with three catches for 40 yards. In addition, Michael Floyd and Andre Roberts also stepped up in the clutch and showed that the Red Birds can still prosper if Fitzgerald is hurt.
"You’re going to lose your playmakers,” quarterback Carson Palmer explained to azcardinals.com. “For us not to have Larry in a critical game, it’s tough. … You look around the huddle (at the end) and there’s not one guy acting like this is the game on the line. It’s just a drive.”
Fitzgerald is hoping to be ready to play when the Cardinals (1-1) face the New Orleans Saints on Sunday at the Louisiana Superdome. The Red Birds will need all the weapons they can get at their disposal against Drew Brees and the high octane offense of the Saints (2-0).
Fitzgerald's status for Sunday's game is not known at this time. The NFL injury report comes out later today.
