There is nothing like getting your first victory as a head coach with your new team. Bruce Arians knows that wonderful feeling now following the Arizona Cardinals' 25-21 triumph over Detroit on Sunday in Glendale.

"It’s always special,” Arians told azcentral.com. “You never know when you’re going to get it. We are going on a really tough road trip. I am very happy we got it at home. We have to win at home. Scratch out a few on the road, and you’ll be in the playoffs.”

That's the plan. If you can win seven of your eight home games and three or four on the road, that is usually a recipe for making the playoffs. What was impressive about Sunday's win was that the Red Birds rallied from a 21-13 deficit midway through the third quarter. They never hung their heads, they just kept fighting. Rashard Mendenhall's one -yard burst gave the Cardinals the lead for good with just 1:59 remaining in the fourth quarter.

"Our guys fought their tails off," Arians said at his post-game press conference. "Our defense was lights out in the second half. It was a team win. Overall, I was extremely pleased."

The way the Cardinals played was far from perfect. Palmer threw a bad interception that was returned for a Lions touchdown and too often Arizona had to settle for a Jay Feely field goal (he had four of them). On the flip side though, wide receiver Kerry Taylor stepped up big down the stretch. Promoted from the practice squad on Saturday, Taylor had three receptions for 40 yards when Larry Fitzgerald was sidelined with a sore hamstring.

Not only that but rookie running back Andre Ellington caught a 36-yard touchdown pass from Palmer, his first NFL touchdown.

''It's not always going to be perfect,'' Arians explained via yahoosports.com. ''You've got to learn how to ride the emotions of the game, stay with it. I thought our coaches did a great job with some adjustments in the second half and some young kids really stepped up.''
