Rashard Mendenhall's 1-yard touchdown run with 1:59 remaining rallied the Arizona Cardinals to a thrilling 25-21 triumph over the Detroit Lions in the home opener for the Red Birds at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale.
Mendenhall finished with 66 yards on the ground while quarterback Carson Palmer threw for 248 yards with one TD and one interception.
Both teams are now 1-1.
Mendenhall's game-winning score was set up by a pass interference penalty in the end zone by Detroit's Bill Bentley.
Cornerback Patrick Peterson had a tough game going against wide receiver Calvin Johnson (6 receptions for 116 yards, 2 TD) but he chipped in with a 17-yard catch and also attempted and completed his first NFL pass, a 17-yard toss to Kerry Taylor in the third quarter.
Palmer was sacked just once, a good sign for Arizona's offensive line. On the flip side, Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald was obviously hampered by his sore hamstring. Fitzgerald caught just two passes for 33 yards and was not on the field for his team's winning drive due to his injury.
