Rob Housler will miss tomorrow's season opener with a sprained right ankle he suffered against the San Diego Chargers in a preseason contest on Aug. 24. It appears that rookie D.C. Jefferson will start in Housler's place. In a two tight end set, Jim Dray will man the other side.
Housler could not mask his disappointment.
“I had this game marked on my calendar not just for the opener but it was a divisional game,” Housler told espn.com. “It’s really important that we get started off on the right foot. Didn’t want to get started off on this foot. Disappointed.”
Disappointing for the Red Birds too. Housler had 45 receptions for 417 yards to pace all Arizona tight ends last season as is being counted on to help open up the middle of the field for quarterback Carson Palmer. Now that will have to wait. When Housler will be ready to return is not known at this time.
“I can’t play because I can’t play,” Housler explained to espn.com. “It’s not a maybe kinda thing. I just wouldn’t be an asset to the team. It’s hard to swallow but its one of those things you can’t really do anything about.”
In the meantime, Dray and Jefferson will have to step up. Both have shown improvement over the summer. Head coach Bruce Arians is especially impressed with Dray.
“He does everything right,” Arians said. “Not flashy but it all gets done and it all gets done correctly. That’s the kind of guys you count on.”
Elsewhere, defensive end Calais Campbell (bruised thigh) is questionable for Sunday's game against St. Louis.
