Not only did they lose to the San Diego Chargers, 24-7, but they also suffered numerous injuries, including a broken left leg suffered by first round draft pick Jonathan Cooper.
The University of North Carolina product is out indefinitely and may be lost for the season. He was being counted on to help improve an offensive line that was probably the league's worst last season. Now it's back to the drawing board for the Red Birds.
"That offensive line was starting to jell a little bit, and he was playing extremely well," head coach Bruce Arians said about Cooper to usatoday.com. "But the next man has to step up. That's what has to happen."
So who is going to replace Cooper? The most likely candidate is Chilo Rachal, a free agent pickup from the Chicago Bears this off season. He is Cooper's backup.
"It's a tragic situation," said Colledge to usatoday.com. "Anytime you lose a starter it's hard but in this business it's next man up and the show must go on. "So it's an open competition I'm assuming at that position and it's a chance for somebody to prove themselves. That situation will sort itself out, whatever it is. I'm paid to play wherever I'm put."
Yes, he is. So is Rachal.
