The injury-plagued running back will probably miss his third straight preseason game on Saturday due to his knee issue. The Red Birds host the San Diego Chargers at University of Phoenix Stadium and Williams has not been able to practice since the early days of training camp.
"He needs to start playing, "Arizona head coach Bruce Arians said via azcardinals.com. "Can’t evaluate him unless you play. You can’t get these reps back. He had an excellent OTAs, started with an excellent camp, running and cutting. Then just put the brakes on. You can’t get this back.”
Williams is getting sharp pain from an irritation under the fatty pad in his knee. It's been a disastrous start to a critical year for Williams, who has been plagued with injury issues since he was drafted in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft.
The Virginia Tech product seems pretty sure that his coaches are frustrated. He certainly is too.
“I wouldn’t doubt that they were,” Williams told azcardinals.com. “Can I sense it? No. If they are they are doing a good (job) of hiding it. I’m pretty sure they are, but it’s not to the point where they are mad at me. They are more mad at the situation like I am.”
Williams has every reason to feel frustrated. He has appeared in just five games in his two seasons in the NFL. He has 58 carries for 164 yards and no touchdowns. This is a crucial time for him in his young career.
He may be running out of time.
