“I do think they have the right guys in leadership positions both offensively and defensively to kind of hold this ship down,” Warner told azcentral.com. “And then you add this coach (Bruce Arians) into the mix who can really hold the ship down and I think they’re going to be in fine shape.”
Warner feels having a solid defense like the Red Birds have can only help take some of the pressure off Palmer's broad shoulders.
“I think the great thing is that if this defense plays up to where it was last year, you won’t have to feel like you have to score 25 to 30 points,” Warner explained to azcentral.com. “It’s going to be more about, ‘Don’t make the big mistakes.’ Do what you feel comfortable with and trust the guys around you to play well also.”
Those players include Warner's old teammate, Larry Fitzgerald and new running back Rashard Mendenhall, the former workhorse back for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Mendenhall can hopefully keep defenses honest and set up play-action for Palmer. Warner knows though that other players will have to step up in order for Fitzgerald to excel again.
“Michael Floyd, Andre Roberts. Can those guys become dependable targets for him (Carson Palmer)?” Warner told azcentral.com. “Teams are going to focus on Larry. They’re going to continue to focus on him until somebody shows him different.”
No doubt. That is what will make this training camp so interesting though – who will step up to help lead the Red Birds to better times in 2013?
