The 2013 NFL Rookie Symposium was held in Aurora, Ohio last week and one player that came away enlightened was Arizona Cardinals rookie Tyrann Mathieu.

The Red Birds' third round draft pick in this year's NFL Draft, the "Honey Badger" enjoyed the symposium, where the league's first-year players got a crash course into what life is like as a professional athlete.

Even though Mathieu has heard similar messages before, the words still resonated with him a great deal.

"I didn't look at it [as] redundant. I looked at it as more people trying to help me," Mathieu explained to "My process is a bit different than the rest of the rookies there. For me, it was an experience I needed."

Among those speakers Mathieu heard at the symposium were Adam "Pac Man" Jones, Brian Dawkins and former Cardinals defensive back Aeneas Williams, one of the greatest Red Birds players of all time. The rookies also paid a visit to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton to get a sense of how high their career can eventually go.

All in all, it was a trip that was well worth taking.

"For me, [the symposium] was real educational, inspiring and one of those reality checks, and I've had a few of those since I've become an Arizona Cardinal," Mathieu said via

Based on his troubled past, no one needed the symposium more than Mathieu and he seemed to make the best of it.
