Football polls say Mater Dei has the No. 1 team in the nation

Mater Dei enters the 2017 season as the No. 1 team in the nation, according to a consensus of the preseason national high school football rankings that have rolled out in recent weeks.

The Monarchs were selected first or second in all five of the major national rankings – MaxPreps Xcellent 25, USA Today Super 25 and High School Football America, and the computer rankings done by MaxPreps and USA Today.

Mater Dei was picked No. 1 by MaxPreps Xcellent 25, USA Today Super 25 and the MaxPreps computer. In the other two polls, St. John Bosco of Bellflower was picked No. 1, giving the Trinity League the top two teams in the national composite rankings.

Mater Dei was 13-1 overall last season and reached the CIF-SS Division 1 championship game, where it lost to St. John Bosco.

Some observers have called this perhaps the most talented Mater Dei team in the school’s formidable history.

The team has a number of standouts on offense, including junior quarterback JT Daniels, who recently committed to USC, receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown, C.J. Parks (UCLA) and Nikko Remigio (Cal), and linemen Tommy Brown (Alabama) and Chris Murray.
